Socket weld flanges, often abbreviated as SW flanges, are a type of flange that is designed to be welded onto the pipe. They have a socket-like appearance where the pipe is inserted into the flange prior to welding. The connection is then created by fillet welding around the outer perimeter of the flange.
KF socket weld flanges specifically refer to a type of flange used in vacuum applications, typically in vacuum systems like those used in scientific research or industrial processes. "KF" stands for "Klein Flansche" in German, which translates to "small flanges." These flanges are commonly used in vacuum systems due to their ability to provide a high vacuum seal and easy assembly and disassembly for maintenance or modifications.

It is important to note that a butt weld pipe connection is not recommended for suiting a socket counter bore connection when a square end pipe connection is possible.
